Learn about the OFAH’s advocacy on Bill C-21
What is the OFAH’s position on Bill C-21
Introduced by the federal government in May 2022 before becoming law in December 2023, Bill C-21 codified the national handgun freeze, increased penalties for certain firearms offences, introduced red and yellow flag laws, and amended the definition of ‘prohibited firearm’ to include future models of certain semi-automatic centre-fire rifles and shotguns. While many of the provisions of Bill C-21 do not impact the hunting community directly, the OFAH has been advocating against Bill C-21 since its introduction, calling into question the government’s messaging about the Bill’s stated purpose, which was to increase public safety by reducing the criminal misuse of firearms. OFAH work on Bill C-21 included active lobbying of federal and provincial politicians, presentations to Parliamentary Standing Committees and development and distribution of fact sheets as part of a wide-spread communications and awareness campaign. How You Can Help

Municipal Discharge of Firearms Bylaws
Many municipalities have adopted municipal discharge of firearms bylaws that impact hunting, trapping, and recreational shooting. The OFAH has been involved in dozens of discharge discussions, advocating on behalf of hunters to ensure such bylaws are justified, reasonable, and strike a balance between legitimate public safety concerns and the lawful use of firearms. We also play an important role in raising awareness locally and encouraging residents of the municipality to get involved and voice their opinions.
