Empowering Community Fish Hatcheries Since 2013
Long-standing Tradition Of Volunteer-based Fish Stocking
Ontario’s Community Hatchery Program (CHP) has its roots in the long-standing tradition of volunteer-based fish stocking. For decades, thousands of dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to enhance recreational fishing and educate Ontarians about their remarkable natural resources. Fish stocking and community involvement are still essential components of fisheries management in Ontario, and currently about 40 community hatcheries are in operation, plus several Chinook Salmon pen-rearing operations.
Launched in March 2013, the CHP is a collaborative initiative between the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNR). This program provides operational and capital funding support to community hatcheries and offers strategic assistance for fish culture and stocking efforts across Ontario. In 2024, the OFAH and MNRF signed a three-year agreement (2024-2027) for the program to continue, with MNR providing over $1,000,000 in program and hatchery funding, and the OFAH administering the CHP on the province’s behalf. Additional funding for the program comes from the OFAH’s fundraising efforts, donations, and the angling industry.
The CHP also supports community hatchery operations by funding and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technical expertise among hatcheries. This program helps hatcheries meet government requirements and promotes fish health, proper egg collection, rearing, and stocking these public fish into public waters. Through the efforts of volunteers and the CHP, Ontario continues to improve its fishing opportunities, while fostering a vibrant community dedicated to sustainable fisheries management.
The CHP and the hatcheries it supports not only bolster fish populations, but also educate the public about the importance of conservation and sustainable fishing practices. By engaging local communities, the program ensures the continued enjoyment and preservation of Ontario’s rich fishing heritage.

CHP Fish Stocking
Community hatcheries release millions of fish annually, boosting native species and enhancing angling experiences. Depending on the species and goals, fish are stocked at various life stages for maximum impact.
Volunteer
