Rate of Pay: $20.00-$21.00 per hour + 4% vacation pay

The OFAH/Fitzsimons Financial Conservation Internship is an exciting early-career opportunity to work with OFAH fish and wildlife professionals on a range of policy, conservation, and outreach projects. Previous OFAH interns have gone on to undertake graduate degrees and/or work with other stakeholder organizations, government agencies and the OFAH.

The successful candidate will gain practical work experience in fish and wildlife policy review and development with Policy & Programs Department biologists and managers. Additionally, the intern will work with the Community Hatchery Program (CHP), Invasive Species Awareness Program (ISAP), and Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program (LOASRP) on program activities such as outreach, spring field work (expected to include fish stocking, tree planting, stream clean-ups and monitoring). The successful candidate will also have opportunities to work with OFAH Youth Education Programs staff educating youth and the public about conservation, hunting and fishing, and Ontario’s natural heritage.


Education and Qualifications:

  • Recently graduated from post-secondary education in biology, ecology, fish and wildlife, environmental science, or a related resource management program;
  • Experience working with the public and youth would be an asset; and
  • Experience with fish and wildlife field work, including habitat restoration, would be an asset.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Intermediary computer skills (MS Office);
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (including scientific literature reviews, report preparation and public speaking);
  • Organizational, multi-tasking, time management and project management skills; and
  • Ability to work independently and co-operatively in a large organizational team.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s licence (class G), pleasure craft operator card, emergency first aid with level A CPR & AED certification (as a minimum), and OFAH membership (required at time of hire). OFAH employees are required to complete a criminal record check every three years.
  • Fishing licence and outdoors card with accredited hunter would be assets.
  • Small boat operating and trailering experience would be an asset.
  • Experience with any of GIS, graphics design (e.g., infographics) and statistical analysis/programming would be an asset.
