For the last 16 years on the opening day of the trout season (4th Saturday of April) the Pickering Rod and Gun Club (PRGC), Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Zone G, community organizations and local businesses have been sponsoring a Huck Finn Fishing Day in the town of Uxbridge. The fun begins with a parade through the downtown streets, led by a pipe band, the budding anglers, dressed in their Huck Finn outfits, riding their bikes or towing their wagons decorated as rafts or row boats parade their way to Elgin Pond
At the pond they register for the event at the Canadian Tire booth and then proceed to pick up their fishing tackle and bait from the PRGC tent. In the preceding week PRGC and OFAH Zone G have stocked the pond with 500-700 brook trout and the Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation Officers have been policing the pond to ensure that there are abundant hungry fish to be caught. Marked fish are released for grand prizes but every registered young angler goes home with a prize. Muskies Canada will show the kids how to make their own fishing lures and some lucky volunteer will be offering to clean all the fish caught so they are pan ready for dinner that night. (Wil, will you be returning for another year?) Parents remember that if you are going to be fishing you will need your own fishing licenses as the MNR&F will be on patrol to ensure regulation compliance.
So create an entry in your smartphone or write on the family calendar that Huck Finn Day for 2019 will be held on April 27 starting at 09:00 for the parade and 10:00 for the fishing derby. The day will wrap up by 1:00 so don’t disappoint the kids by coming late.
