The OFAH is a leading advocate for the expansion of Sunday Gun Hunting
The Origin of Sunday Gun Hunting
Since 2006, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) has been at the forefront of promoting and expanding Sunday gun hunting (SGH) opportunities in southern Ontario municipalities. Partnering with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Ministry of Natural Resources, we launched a pioneering initiative to lobby municipal governments, aiming to open up more opportunities for hunters. This effort started with an impressive 67 municipalities onboard, marking a significant beginning of what would become a long-term campaign to enhance hunting opportunities in the region.
The Journey from 2006 to Today
The push for SGH began with a clear vision: to provide southern Ontario hunters the same opportunities enjoyed by their counterparts north of the French River. This mission was not without its challenges. Convincing municipalities to permit SGH requires persistent advocacy, comprehensive education on the benefits of hunting, and addressing any concerns from local communities.
Despite these challenges, our dedication has never wavered. Through continuous dialogue, community engagement, and evidence-based lobbying, we have successfully increased the number of municipalities allowing SGH from the initial 67 to over 190 as of September 2023. This remarkable growth underscores the effectiveness of OFAH’s strategies and the strong support from local members of the hunting community.
Twice annually, a regulation amendment is made to the provincial Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act 1997, which adds the names of municipalities to the areas where Sunday gun hunting is permitted. Below is a map of municipalities and WMUs that allow Sunday gun hunting in Ontario.

Why Sunday Gun Hunting Matters
Sunday gun hunting offers numerous benefits, not only to hunters but also to the wider community. It provides hunters with more flexibility, particularly those with busy weekdays, allowing them to enjoy their heritage and contribute to wildlife management and conservation efforts. Additionally, SGH can boost local economies by increasing demand for hunting-related goods and services.
Hunting is associated with the rare triple dividends of social, economic, and ecological benefits. Specifically, hunting can help with controlling crop and livestock predation, reduce the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions, and generate revenue for fish and wildlife management. In fact, the original proposal to expand Sunday gun hunting in 2005 also included an amendment to expand deer seasons where guns can be used to include Sundays. The proposal specifically highlighted the benefits of hunting, saying “the extended seasons are intended to assist in the control of agricultural damage caused by deer and reduce the number of deer/vehicle collisions as well as enhance hunting opportunities.” Hunting is also recognized as a heritage activity in provincial and federal legislation.
OFAH has consistently highlighted these benefits in its advocacy efforts, ensuring that municipal councillors understand the positive impact of hunting in general. The increase in municipalities permitting SGH is a testament to the success of these efforts and the growing recognition of hunting’s role in sustainable wildlife management.
