OFAH applauds National Hunting, Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day

The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) is looking forward to celebrating the inaugural National Hunting, Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day in September 2015.

Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock saw his Private Members’ Bill C-501: An Act Respecting a National Hunting, Trapping and Fishing Heritage Day receive Royal Assent earlier this month.

While Canadians understand the importance hunting, fishing and trapping played in Canada’s early economy, many don’t realize that today the three activities contribute $14 billion to the national economy each year.

The OFAH has long supported Mr. Norlock’s bill, which offers an opportunity for Canadians to enjoy the third Saturday in September in the great outdoors to honour a proud part of Canada’s history.

“We appreciate Mr. Norlock’s passion for all things outdoors and his perseverance in having this national day enshrined in law,” OFAH Executive Director Angelo Lombardo said. “Hunting, fishing and trapping have not only played a crucial role in building the economy and cultural fabric of this nation, the three activities continue to bolster the national economy today while funding valuable fish and wildlife conservation initiatives.”

Hunters, trappers and anglers represent some of Canada’s most dedicated conservationists, contributing billions of dollars to conservation projects across Canada through the purchase of tags, licences and stamps and through participation in organizations such as the OFAH.

With over 100,000 members, subscribers and supporters and 720 member clubs, the OFAH is Ontario’s largest nonprofit, fish and wildlife conservation-based organization and the VOICE of anglers and hunters.
